Red Jacket (Sagoyewatha)

Sagoyewatha, known as Red Jacket, was a Seneca chief of the Wolf clan and one of the most celebrated orators of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. He represented the Seneca in negotiations with the new United States, taking part in the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua that affirmed Haudenosaunee lands. He is especially remembered for his speeches defending Seneca sovereignty and the right to keep their traditional religion. He died in 1830.
