Pope St. Pius V
1504 CE–1572 CE · Alessandria
Born Antonio Ghislieri near Alessandria, he entered the Dominican order young, lived austerely, and rose through the Inquisition to cardinal. As Pius V he became the foremost enforcer of the Council of Trent's reforms, embodying disciplined holiness. He promulgated the Roman Catechism, the revised Breviary, and the 1570 Roman Missal that standardized the Tridentine Mass for four centuries. He organized the Holy League whose fleet won the 1571 naval victory at Lepanto over the Ottomans. His severity also marked his reign: a rigorous Inquisition and the 1570 bull excommunicating Elizabeth I, which worsened English Catholics' plight. He was canonized in 1712.
