Pope Nicholas IV
1227 CE–1292 CE · Lisciano
Born Girolamo Masci at Lisciano near Ascoli Piceno, Nicholas IV was the first Franciscan pope, having served as minister general of the order. As pope he energetically promoted missions, dispatching the friar John of Montecorvino to the Mongol court and eventually China, and sought alliances to recover the Holy Land—though Acre, the last crusader stronghold, fell in 1291 during his reign. He favored the Colonna family heavily, drawing criticism, and patronized art, restoring Roman basilicas. He issued a constitution granting cardinals half the Church's revenues. He died in Rome, after which the see lay vacant for over two years.
