Pope Bl. Benedict XI
1240 CE–1304 CE · Treviso
Born Niccolò Boccasini at Treviso to humble parents, Benedict XI was a Dominican who became master general of his order before his elevation. Elected immediately after the turbulent Boniface VIII, he sought conciliation: he lifted many of Boniface's censures, made peace overtures to Philip IV of France, and pardoned the Colonna cardinals, though he excommunicated those directly responsible for the Anagni outrage. A gentle and learned man, he reigned only eight months before dying suddenly at Perugia—rumored, though unproven, to have been poisoned. He was beatified in 1736. His death opened the long conclave preceding the Avignon papacy.
