Pope John XIX
?–1032 CE · Tusculum
John XIX, born Romanus, was the brother of Benedict VIII and, like him, a member of the powerful Tusculani family. A layman serving as senator and ruler of Rome, he was hastily ordained and elevated when his brother died, securing the family's grip on the papacy. He crowned Conrad II emperor in 1027. He reportedly entertained, then dropped under Eastern pressure, a request from Constantinople to recognize the ecumenical title of its patriarch. A patron of music, he is connected with the theorist Guido of Arezzo, whom he summoned to Rome. His pontificate reflects the thoroughly dynastic, secularized papacy of the Tusculan era.
