Pope Gelasius II
?–1119 CE · Gaeta
John of Gaeta, a learned monk of Monte Cassino who served long as papal chancellor and reformed the curial chancery's Latin style, became Gelasius II in 1118. His brief reign was beset by violence: immediately after election he was assaulted by the Frangipani, a powerful Roman family, then driven from Rome when Emperor Henry V arrived and set up an antipope, Gregory VIII. Gelasius fled to France, taking refuge at Cluny, where he died in 1119. His harried pontificate underscored how unresolved the investiture conflict and Roman factionalism remained, leaving to his successor the task of negotiating a settlement.
