Pope Callixtus II
?–1124 CE · Quingey, Burgundy
Guy of Burgundy, son of the count of Burgundy and archbishop of Vienne, was elected Callixtus II at Cluny and brought the investiture controversy to resolution. Of high noble birth and well connected across Europe, he negotiated the Concordat of Worms in 1122 with Emperor Henry V, a compromise distinguishing the spiritual investiture of bishops, reserved to the church, from the granting of temporal regalia by the emperor. Ratified at the First Lateran Council in 1123 — the first general council held in the West — this settlement largely ended a half-century struggle. His pontificate marks a turning point toward a more independent papacy.
