Tacitus
c. 200 CE–c. 276 CE · Terni
Marcus Claudius Tacitus, an elderly senator, became emperor in late 275 CE following the murder of Aurelian, and is sometimes described as the last emperor formally nominated by the Senate (though Zosimus and Zonaras say the army proclaimed him). He campaigned in the East against the Goths and Heruli, earning the title Gothicus Maximus, but died after a reign of only about six months, in 276 CE at Tyana in Cappadocia, reportedly of fever (Zosimus alleges assassination).
