Aurelian
c. 214 CE–c. 275 CE · Sremska Mitrovica
Aurelian (r. 270–275 CE) reunified the empire by reconquering the breakaway Palmyrene and Gallic realms, earning the title Restitutor Orbis ("Restorer of the World"). After defeating Zenobia of Palmyra and retaking Antioch (272), he was asked to settle a dispute over the church building there with the already-deposed bishop Paul of Samosata; Eusebius records that Aurelian ruled it should go to whoever was in communion with the bishops of Italy and of Rome, which removed Paul. Eusebius (echoed by Lactantius) also reports that late in his reign Aurelian was moved to begin a persecution of Christians but was killed before any edict took effect — a claim some modern scholars treat with caution.
