Selim I
1470 CE–1520 CE · Constantinople
Selim I, known as 'the Grim' (Yavuz), came to the throne in 1512 after his father Bayezid II's abdication. He defeated the Safavid shah Ismail I at the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514 and then conquered the Mamluk Sultanate, adding Syria, Egypt, and the Hejaz to Ottoman rule in 1516–1517. These conquests brought the holy cities of Mecca and Medina under Ottoman protection and are associated with the passing of caliphal prestige to the Ottoman sultans. He died in 1520 and was succeeded by his son Suleiman I.
