Zuangua (Zwanga)
?–1520 CE · Tzintzuntzan
Zuangua was the cazonci of the Purépecha (Tarascan) empire in the early sixteenth century, ruling from Tzintzuntzan over the last fully independent Tarascan state. He continued to fend off Aztec attacks along the contested frontier and, when the Mexica sought his help against the Spanish, kept Michoacán aloof. He died in the smallpox epidemic that spread ahead of the Europeans around 1520, leaving his weakened realm to face the conquest without him.
