Khalil Gibran

Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese-American poet, essayist, and visual artist. Born in Bsharri in Ottoman Mount Lebanon, he emigrated as a child to Boston, returned to Beirut for schooling, then studied art in Paris before settling in New York City. He wrote in both Arabic and English and was a leading figure of the Mahjar (émigré) school of Arabic literature. His 1923 English prose-poetry work "The Prophet," a sequence of poetic essays on love, work, and death, became one of the best-selling books of the twentieth century. He also produced drawings and paintings. He died in New York in 1931 and was buried in Bsharri.
