Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss was a German composer and conductor whose career bridged late Romanticism and modernism. The son of a court-orchestra horn player, he began composing as a child in Munich. He first won fame with tone poems, including Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Also sprach Zarathustra, and Ein Heldenleben, then turned to opera, producing Salome, Elektra, and Der Rosenkavalier, several with librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. He held conducting posts in Munich, Meiningen, Weimar, Berlin, and Vienna. From 1933 to 1935 he served as president of the Reichsmusikkammer under the Nazi state. He died at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1949.
