D. H. Lawrence

D. H. Lawrence was an English novelist, poet, short-story writer and essayist. The son of a Nottinghamshire coal miner and a former schoolteacher, he trained as a teacher before turning to writing. His novels, including Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920) and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), examined industrial society, sexuality, class and the natural world; several met censorship and obscenity proceedings in his lifetime. He also produced substantial poetry, travel writing and criticism. After 1919 he lived largely abroad in a restless itinerary across Italy, Ceylon, Australia, the American Southwest and Mexico. He died of tuberculosis in southern France in 1930.
