Piet Mondrian

1872 CE1944 CE · Painter · Amersfoort

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter and art theorist, born Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan in Amersfoort in 1872. He trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and worked first in naturalist and Symbolist modes before moving toward abstraction. In Paris he absorbed Cubism, and during the First World War, back in the Netherlands, he helped found the De Stijl movement with Theo van Doesburg. He developed the geometric idiom he called Neoplasticism, restricting his compositions to straight lines, right angles, and primary colors with black, white, and gray. He worked in Paris, then London, and finally New York, where he died in 1944.
