1846–1923 CE

Ledi Sayadaw (U Ñāṇadhaja, 1846–1923 CE) was a Burmese monk-scholar whose work helped open Theravāda insight meditation (vipassanā) and Abhidhamma study to the laity, a shift that shaped the modern global meditation movement. Born in Saingpyin in upper Burma, he combined deep textual learning with an emphasis on accessible practice, and the lineage flowing from his lay students (through teachers such as Saya Thetgyi and U Ba Khin to S. N. Goenka) carried his approach worldwide. He is a well-documented historical figure.
