Rabbi Meir Simcha HaKohen of Dvinsk (1843–1926) was a towering figure of Lithuanian Jewry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Butrimonys, Lithuania, he served as the rabbi of Dvinsk (Daugavpils) for decades and became renowned throughout Eastern European yeshiva circles for his profound mastery of Talmud and halakha. He authored two major works—the Or Sameach (on Mishneh Torah) and the Meshech Chochmah (on the Torah)—which combined rigorous Talmudic analysis with philosophical depth and innovative resolutions of textual difficulties. His students included some of the greatest minds of the generation. Though he lived through the turbulent years of the Russian Empire and the early Soviet period, he remained a beacon of Torah learning until his death in 1926, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Jewish intellectual life for generations.
