Pope Honorius II
?–1130 CE · Imola
Lamberto Scannabecchi, of modest origins near Imola, rose as cardinal-bishop of Ostia and a skilled diplomat who helped negotiate the Concordat of Worms. His election as Honorius II in 1124 was marred by the intervention of the Frangipani family, who forced aside a rival candidate, foreshadowing the factionalism that would soon split the Curia. During his reign he confirmed the new religious and military orders, including recognition associated with the Templars, and managed delicate relations with the Normans in southern Italy. His death in 1130 immediately triggered a disputed double election and a prolonged schism between rival popes.
