Michael I

Michael I (1596–1645) was elected Tsar of Russia by the Zemsky Sobor (assembly of the land) in 1613, becoming the first ruler of the House of Romanov. His accession brought an end to the Time of Troubles, the prolonged period of civil war, foreign intervention, and dynastic crisis that had gripped Russia. During his reign the country recovered stability, made peace with Sweden and Poland, and rebuilt its institutions, often under the guidance of his father, the Patriarch Filaret. The Romanov dynasty he founded would rule Russia for just over three centuries.
