Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who worked almost entirely in his native Delft. Baptized there in 1632, he registered as a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1653 and was elected its headman four times (1662, 1663, 1670, and 1671). He produced a small body of work — around three dozen surviving paintings widely accepted as his — mostly quiet domestic interiors marked by careful composition, precise handling of light, and luminous color. Among the best known are "Girl with a Pearl Earring," "The Milkmaid," and "View of Delft." He worked slowly, ran an art-dealing business, and died in debt in 1675, leaving eleven children.
