Pope Bl. Innocent XI
1611 CE–1689 CE · Modern · Como
Born Benedetto Odescalchi in Como, Innocent XI was esteemed for personal austerity and financial probity, restoring the papal treasury and curbing nepotism and abuses. He waged a sustained struggle with Louis XIV of France over royal control of the Church, the regalia and the 1682 Gallican Articles, refusing to confirm the king's bishops. He was a tireless organizer of resistance to the Ottoman Empire, helping fund the coalition that relieved the Siege of Vienna in 1683 and the subsequent Holy League. He also condemned the spiritual movement known as Quietism. Beatified in 1956, he is honored by the Church as Blessed.
