Gustav Mahler

Gustav Mahler was an Austro-Bohemian composer and conductor whose ten symphonies and orchestral song cycles bridged the late Romantic era and early modernism. Born in 1860 in Kaliště and raised in Jihlava (Iglau), he trained at the Vienna Conservatory (1875-1878) and built his career as an opera conductor through a rising series of posts: Bad Hall (1880), Ljubljana/Laibach (1881-1882), Olomouc/Olmütz (1883), Kassel (1883-1885), Prague (1885-1886), Leipzig (1886-1888), Budapest (1888-1891) and Hamburg (1891-1897). In 1897 he became director of the Vienna Court Opera, a decade often described as a landmark in operatic staging. From 1908 he worked in New York with the Metropolitan Opera and the Philharmonic. He composed chiefly in summer retreats. Falling ill during his final New York season, he returned to Europe and died in Vienna in 1911.
