Chulalongkorn (Rama V)

Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V (1853–1910), was the fifth king of Siam's Chakri dynasty, reigning from 1868 to 1910. His reign was marked by extensive modernizing reforms, including the abolition of slavery, restructuring of government administration, and the development of railways, schools, and a professional bureaucracy. Through diplomacy and selective territorial concessions to Britain and France, he preserved Siam's independence during a period of European colonial expansion in Southeast Asia. He is remembered in Thailand as one of its most consequential monarchs.
