Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short-story writer, and a trained physician. Born in Taganrog to a family that had recently emerged from serfdom, he studied medicine in Moscow while supporting his relatives through comic sketches and stories. He developed a spare, character-driven prose and a theatre of mood and subtext, working closely with the Moscow Art Theatre. His major plays include "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," "Three Sisters," and "The Cherry Orchard." In 1890 he travelled across Siberia to survey the Sakhalin Island penal colony. Suffering from tuberculosis, he settled in Yalta and later died at the German spa town of Badenweiler.
