1808–1887 CE
Patrul Rinpoche (1808–1887 CE) was a Nyingma master of eastern Tibet renowned both for his learning in the Dzogchen ('Great Perfection') tradition and for an unusually simple, wandering, and humble way of life. Born in the nomadic region of Dzachukha in Kham, he is best known for 'The Words of My Perfect Teacher' (Kunzang Lamé Shyalung), a beloved and widely read guide to the preliminary practices and the path. A figure of the same 19th-century nonsectarian milieu as Jamgön Kongtrül and Khyentse Wangpo, he is securely historical and well documented.
