Emperor Meiji reigned from 1867 to 1912, during Japan's most dramatic transformation. The Meiji Restoration of 1868 abolished the Tokugawa shogunate and restored governing authority to the imperial throne in his name. Under his reign Japan rapidly modernized: it industrialized, adopted a constitution in 1889, built a conscript army and modern navy, and reformed education and finance, turning a formerly secluded feudal country into a modern world power.
