Peter Kropotkin

Peter Kropotkin was a Russian-born political theorist and geographer, one of the principal exponents of anarchist communism. Descended from Moscow nobility, he served as an army officer and explorer in Siberia, where his surveys reshaped understanding of Asian orography and glaciation. Turning to radical politics, he was arrested in 1874 and imprisoned in Saint Petersburg, escaped in 1876, and spent decades in exile — first in Switzerland, where he founded the journal Le Révolté before his 1881 expulsion, and afterward chiefly in France and England, writing and lecturing. His books, including Mutual Aid, The Conquest of Bread, and Fields, Factories and Workshops, argued that cooperation is a major factor in evolution and society. He returned to Russia in 1917 and died at Dmitrov in 1921.
