Christoph Willibald Gluck

Christoph Willibald Gluck was a composer active in the eighteenth-century Holy Roman Empire, chiefly in Vienna and Paris. Born in Bavaria to a forester's family, he trained in Bohemia and Italy, studying with Giovanni Battista Sammartini in Milan, and worked as an opera composer across Milan, London, and Vienna. He is associated with a reform of serious opera that favored dramatic directness and integration of music and text, exemplified by works such as Orfeo ed Euridice, Alceste, and Iphigénie en Aulide. He composed operas in Italian, French, and German, and spent his final years in Vienna, where he died in 1787.
