Antoni Gaudí
1852 CE–1926 CE · Architect · Reus
Antoni Gaudí was a Catalan architect and a central figure of Catalan Modernisme. Trained in Barcelona, he developed a highly personal idiom drawing on natural forms, geometry, color, ceramics, and structural experiment. His Barcelona works include Casa Vicens, Palau Güell, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà (La Pedrera); from 1883 he directed the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, which absorbed his final decades and remained unfinished at his death. He lived austerely and, in later years, devoutly. On 7 June 1926 he was struck by a tram in Barcelona and died three days later; he was buried in the basilica's crypt. Several of his buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
