Meir Atlas
1848 CE–1926 CE · Acharonim · Baisagola
Rabbi Meir Atlas (1848–1926) was a Lithuanian rabbi and halachic authority active across the Jewish communities of the Russian Empire. Born in Baisagola, in the Kovno region, he was among the group that established the yeshiva of Telz (Telšiai) in 1875, working alongside Rabbi Zvi Yaakov Oppenheim, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Abel, and the lay supporter Ovadyah Lachman. Over the following decades he led several communities as rabbi, including Salant, Libau (Liepāja), and Kobryn, and from 1904 he served as rabbi of Shavel (Šiauliai), where he remained until his death. Remembered as a respected posek who produced a substantial body of responsa, he was also connected by marriage to prominent figures of the following generation: his sons-in-law included Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman, who married his daughter Michle, and Rabbi Yehuda (Yehudel) Kahana Shapiro.
