Marc Chagall
c. 1887 CE–c. 1985 CE · Painter · Vitebsk
Marc Chagall was a painter and printmaker born in Vitebsk in the Russian Empire. He trained in Saint Petersburg, then moved to Paris, where he absorbed Cubist and Fauvist currents while retaining imagery drawn from Jewish village life. He returned to Russia during the First World War and served as a commissar for the arts in Vitebsk after the Revolution. Leaving Russia in 1922, he lived for about a year in Berlin, where he made his first engravings, before resettling in France. There he worked across painting, stained glass, tapestry, and stage design. Fleeing the Nazi occupation, he spent the war years in the United States before returning to France, settling first at Vence and later at Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where he lived and worked until his death.
