John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck was an American novelist and short-story writer whose fiction is closely identified with the working people and landscapes of California. Raised in the Salinas Valley, he attended Stanford University intermittently without completing a degree. His major works include Of Mice and Men (1937), The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which won the Pulitzer Prize, Cannery Row (1945), and East of Eden (1952). He also wrote travelogues and reportage, among them Travels with Charley. In 1962 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 1964 the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died in New York City in 1968.
