Georgia O'Keeffe

Georgia O'Keeffe was an American painter associated with the development of modernism in the United States. Born on a Wisconsin farm, she trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, then taught art in Texas before committing to painting full time. From 1916 her work was exhibited by the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married in 1924. She became known for large-scale flower studies, New York cityscapes, and desert landscapes rendered in spare, abstracted forms. After settling in New Mexico in 1949, she painted bones, skies, and the terrain around Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú for decades. She died in Santa Fe in 1986.
