Vasco da Gama
c. 1460 CE–c. 1524 CE · Explorer · Sines
Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese navigator who commanded the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. Departing Lisbon in 1497, his fleet rounded the Cape of Good Hope and reached Calicut on the Malabar Coast in May 1498, opening a maritime route between Europe and Asia. He led a second, armed voyage in 1502. King Manuel I created him first Count of Vidigueira in 1519. In 1524 he was appointed Portuguese viceroy of India and sailed east a third time, arriving in Goa and Cochin, where he died on 24 December 1524. His remains were later transferred to the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.
