Murad IV
1612 CE–1640 CE · Constantinople
Murad IV became Ottoman ruler as a child in 1623 and, after years of rule by regents and court factions, took personal control and restored central authority through severe measures. He is noted for harsh discipline, including bans on tobacco and alcohol, and for recapturing Baghdad from the Safavids in 1638. He died in 1640.
