Nicolas Poussin

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter and draftsman who spent most of his career in Rome and became the foremost exponent of a classical, restrained style of painting. Born near Les Andelys in Normandy, he trained in Paris before settling in Rome in 1624. He specialized in history painting, drawing subjects from the Bible, ancient history, and classical mythology, and was known for measured composition, clarity of narrative, and careful study of antique sculpture. In 1640 he returned briefly to Paris as First Painter to the King under Louis XIII, then went back to Rome, where he worked until his death in 1665. His work shaped later French academic art.
