Diego Velázquez

Diego Velázquez was a Spanish painter of the Golden Age, active chiefly at the court of King Philip IV in Madrid, where he served as principal court painter from 1623. Trained in Seville under Francisco Pacheco, he began with religious subjects and bodegón genre scenes before turning to portraiture and history. He made two extended study journeys to Italy. His works include portraits of the royal family, "Las Meninas," "The Surrender of Breda," "The Rokeby Venus," and "Pope Innocent X." His loose, tonal handling of paint and command of light and space later influenced European painting. He died in Madrid in 1660.
