Pope Clement IX

Pope Clement IX

1600 CE1669 CE · Modern · Pistoia

Born Giulio Rospigliosi in Pistoia, Clement IX was a cultivated diplomat and accomplished poet and librettist who had written opera texts and served as nuncio to Spain. His brief reign is best remembered for the Peace of Clement IX in 1669, a temporary truce that calmed the Jansenist controversy in France by accepting an ambiguous submission from dissenting bishops. He labored, ultimately in vain, to organize Christian aid for Venice against the Ottoman siege of Candia (Crete), whose fall reportedly hastened his death. Known for personal humility and charity, he set aside time to hear confessions in St. Peter's and tended to Rome's poor.
