Artemisia Gentileschi

Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter, the daughter and pupil of the painter Orazio Gentileschi. Her earliest signed work, "Susanna and the Elders," bears the date 1610. In 1612 she was central to a Roman trial in which the painter Agostino Tassi was tried for her rape. She moved to Florence, where in 1616 she became the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, working for the Medici court. She later painted in Rome, Venice, Naples, and London, serving patrons including the Grand Duke of Tuscany and King Charles I. She ran a productive workshop in Naples until her death.
