Pope Alexander VII
1599 CE–1667 CE · Modern · Siena
Born Fabio Chigi in Siena, Alexander VII was a cultured, learned pope who had served as nuncio to Cologne and a papal representative at the negotiations preceding the Peace of Westphalia. As pope he worked closely with Bernini to complete St. Peter's Square with its sweeping colonnade, one of the supreme achievements of Baroque urbanism. He reaffirmed condemnations of Jansenism and clashed repeatedly with the powerful France of Louis XIV, suffering humiliation in the Corsican Guard affair. A patron of learning who welcomed Queen Christina of Sweden to Rome after her conversion, he combined austere personal piety with grand artistic ambition.
