Avraham Rovigo
1650 CE–1713 CE · Acharonim · Modena
Italian kabbalist of Modena (c.1650–1713), a disciple of R. Moshe Zacuto. In 1702 he emigrated to the Land of Israel and founded a yeshiva in Jerusalem, and for years served the Jerusalem rabbinate as a communal emissary across Europe. He was a lifelong friend of R. Benjamin ha-Kohen Vitale. Rovigo was also a leading figure in the moderate Sabbatean current of his time — having become convinced of Shabbetai Tzvi's messianic claims — and the Jerusalem yeshiva he founded drew many who shared that belief.
