Wilhelm I

Wilhelm I was King of Prussia from 1861 and the first Emperor of a unified Germany from 1871 until his death in 1888. His reign saw the wars against Denmark, Austria, and France through which, under the direction of his chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the German states were unified under Prussian leadership. He was proclaimed German Emperor in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He left the conduct of policy largely to Bismarck and was succeeded briefly by his son Friedrich III and then by his grandson Wilhelm II.
