Xianfeng Emperor

The Xianfeng Emperor (1831-1861) was the ninth emperor of China's Qing dynasty, reigning from 1850 to 1861. His reign was overwhelmed by internal and external crises, chiefly the massive Taiping Rebellion, which cost tens of millions of lives, and the Second Opium War against Britain and France. In 1860 he fled the capital as Anglo-French troops advanced on Beijing and burned the Old Summer Palace, and he died the following year at the Chengde mountain retreat; his widow, later known as Empress Dowager Cixi, would soon dominate the court.
