George Eliot

George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, an English novelist, poet, translator, and journalist of the Victorian era. Born on the Arbury estate in Warwickshire, she worked as an editor of the Westminster Review before turning to fiction. Her novels — among them Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda — are noted for their psychological realism, provincial settings, and moral seriousness. She adopted a male pseudonym to secure serious critical reception. She lived for over two decades with the writer George Henry Lewes, and shortly before her death married John Cross. She died in Chelsea, London, in 1880.
