Al-Afdal ibn Salah ad-Din

Al-Afdal ibn Salah ad-Din (c. 1169-1225) was the eldest son of Saladin, who inherited the governance of Damascus and much of Syria on his father's death in 1193. Rivalries among Saladin's heirs led to his loss of Damascus in 1196 to his uncle al-Adil, after which his political fortunes declined. He spent his later years holding minor territories and in effective retirement. He died in 1225.
