Martin Heidegger

Martin Heidegger was a German philosopher whose work reshaped 20th-century European thought. His 1927 book Being and Time reframed the ancient question of the meaning of "Being" through an analysis of Dasein — his term for the human being as the site where existence becomes a question — stressing finitude, time, and everyday life. He influenced phenomenology, hermeneutics, existentialism, and theology. He taught at Marburg and Freiburg, where he was elected rector in 1933 and joined the Nazi Party that year; he resigned the rectorship in 1934. His later writings turned to language, technology, and poetry. He died in Freiburg in 1976.
