Frida Kahlo
1907 CE–1954 CE · Painter · Coyoacán, Mexico City
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for intensely personal self-portraits and works drawing on Mexican folk art, popular culture, and her own body. Born in Coyoacán, she contracted polio as a child and, at eighteen, suffered severe injuries in a bus accident that shaped a lifetime of pain and repeated surgeries. She began painting during her convalescence. She married the muralist Diego Rivera, and the couple traveled in the United States before returning to Mexico. Her paintings combine realism, symbolism, and folk imagery, often addressing identity, the body, and loss. She exhibited in Mexico, New York, and Paris, and taught art in Mexico City.
