René Magritte
1898 CE–1967 CE · Painter · Lessines
René Magritte was a Belgian artist associated with Surrealism, known for images that pair ordinary objects with unexpected juxtapositions and wordplay. Born in Lessines in 1898, he spent his youth in Châtelet and Charleroi before studying at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. After a period near Paris from 1927 to 1930, where he took part in the Surrealist circle, he returned to Brussels, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. His paintings, including works questioning the relationship between an image and the thing it depicts, influenced later art and visual culture. He died in Brussels in 1967.
