J. R. R. Tolkien

J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer and philologist, born in 1892 in Bloemfontein and raised in and around Birmingham after his family returned to England. He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, served in the First World War, and held professorships of English language at the University of Leeds and then Oxford, where he specialized in Old and Middle English. Alongside his academic work he wrote fiction, publishing The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings in 1954-1955, works set in an invented world with constructed languages. He was a member of the Inklings literary circle and died in 1973.
