Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French painter and a leading figure of the Impressionist movement. Born in Limoges in 1841, he moved with his family to Paris as a child and began as a porcelain decorator before training in painting. In the 1860s and 1870s he worked alongside Claude Monet and others, developing a luminous style noted for its treatment of light, color, and the human figure. His subjects included Parisian leisure scenes, portraits, and nudes. In later decades, affected by arthritis, he settled in the south of France at Cagnes-sur-Mer, where he continued to paint until his death in 1919.
